The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2015) Review

Sonny’s idea of the The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has worked so well that they do not have many vacancies for rooms left, so he dreams of expanding to open a second hotel. Not everything goes to plan though and he must also try to focus on his up and coming wedding.

After the success of the first film, something they might not have actually thought about? But with Maggie Smith and Judi Dench in the same cast it was always going to be popular. Obviously my love for Bill Nighy I will see anything that he is in, with the bonus of adding in Richard Gere. It is always going to have a wide-spread audience. It opened in the UK last night and a film that will get old people to the cinema. The screening I was at last night is proof of that, myself and my friend were easily the youngest people by 20 years in the cinema. Something which I thought was good as at least films are still being made for all age groups.

With having a lot of the same characters as the first film and a couple of new ones a lot of things are going on throughout the film. Each character has their own story line, not that its difficult to follow just makes for a more complex story making sure they are all involved. Showing different things you must deal with as you grow older, along with a wedding which is one of the more central plots in the story as every character is involved in that.

The people who decided to stay in India are working in different jobs and doing very well for themselves making a difference. Maggie Smith’s Mrs Donnelly has calmed down a lot since the first film and at times even feels like a different character, I guess we can pretend that this is due to her new lease of life in a different place? Maybe we can look at it like that just for the sake of this film. But she is certainly very involved in the story this time and has a good relationship with Sonny.

Another love story is more central this time wondering if Evelyn and Douglas are ever going to admit to each other how they feel. It is a very nice story, I know the word nice isn’t the best to use but it truly is a lovely story. Helping to show that you can still find a new love no matter how old you are, I like the idea of that you don’t ever have to give up hope.

The film does send a lot of nice messages and does have a fantastic few scenes for the wedding. It really will make you think again about what old people can still do so don’t count them out too quickly. So while I didn’t think this was as good as the first one and recycles some of the jokes I did still enjoy it. I am sure it will do well at the box office, especially here in the UK.
