The Sandman Season 2 Starts Filming with the Writers Guild of America Still on Strike

Posted on the 29 June 2023 by Jitender Sharma

Towards the end of May, Neil Gaiman, the creator of Sandman, made a speech at the picket line of the WGA strike. In support of the strike he said that it was to make life worth living for those who make entertainment. Maintaining solidarity with the WGA’s movement and admitting that it will be difficult with the writers on strike, Gaiman starts filming for Sandman season 2. There will be no rewriting of the scripts to begin with. Writers will be involved if the strike comes to an end before the filming ends.

This is what Neil Gaiman had to say about the impact of the strike on his projects: “Absolutely, it will have a negative effect on the promotion and success of Good Omens, just as it will have a negative effect on Anansi Boys (which has just gone to “picture lock” on all six episodes without me signing off on the edits) and on Sandman (which will be shooting without anyone rewriting the scripts, which were frozen as of May 31st). But it’s worth it.

All of the main cast of the first season are likely to return in the new season. We’ll see Tom Sturridge as Dream, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer and Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne just like in the first season. There will be four new characters – Delirium, Destiny, Destruction, and Wanda. We don’t know who’ll be cast in these roles yet.

Season 2 of Sandman will likely adapt volume 4 of the Comics, Season of Mists and volume 7, Brief Lives. Wanda’s appearance in the show is going to be interesting and a bit different from the comics. In the comics, she appears in A Game of You, however, in Sandman 2, she’s supposed to replace Ruby DeLonge. We might also see references to The Song of Orpheus as Destruction makes an appearance in that comic volume.

Gaiman started filming the second season of Sandman on 26th June at Shepperton Studios, the same venue where most of the first season was shot. There’s also some evidence that they are currently shooting at Durdle Door in Dorset. Although this is based on circumstantial evidence.

There is no release date available for Sandman 2. But since filming has already commenced, you can expect it to come out sometime in 2024.
