The Sandbox, a web-based game platform, has hired OpenZeppelin, a prominent blockchain infrastructure security company, to avoid metaverse attacks, the firms said on Thursday.

OpenZeppelin, the company behind the Forta network, will audit smart contracts, monitor vulnerabilities, and warn of potential metaverse threats.

Stephen Lloyd Webber, developer advocate at OpenZeppelin, asserts that proactively observing and identifying flaws is essential for enforcing security in a decentralized environment. He added that waiting for threats to be found will result in their discovery after the damage has been done.

“The pieces that make up a metaverse puzzle are intricate and extensive and there is a lot to keep an eye on,” said Webber. “The practice of auditing has proven essential in deploying existing Web3 services.”

After a $625 million hack of Axie Infinity’s Ronin network in March, the topic concerning metaverse security has become more critical this year. In October alone, hackers stole about $760 million worth of cryptocurrency, according to statistics from blockchain security company Peckshield.

According to The Sandbox’s COO and co-founder, Sebastien Borget, integrating OpenZeppelin would not only boost the security of the game’s smart contracts, but it will also continue to find weaknesses to maintain the game’s safety as it evolves.

“With over 4.3 million registered wallets, The Sandbox is a major actor in Web3 democratization,” said Borget. “OpenZeppelin’s security services help build a reliable framework and reinforce trust in our ecosystem, a key factor in onboarding more newcomers to our platform and to Web3 as a whole.”
