Plot: A great white shark hunts the crew of a capsized sailboat along the Great Barrier Reef.
Verdict: Open Water Thriller
Story: We follow five friends who go on a boat trip to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef, but when the tide comes in they have to leave. Returning to the main land their boat capsizes leaving them stranded in the middle of the Ocean, they must make the decision to swim or wait on the boat. With four swimming we follow them as they make the desperate attempt to survive.
This all comes off very well, it gives use plenty of suspense as we have to wait and see if they will make it all while being stalked by a shark. We get to see how they try to keep calm and surprisingly stay very calm considering what is happening. You do get dragged in to want to know who will survive and we don’t know which ones if any will. It isn’t the most challenging film to watch but then it doesn’t need to be, it achieves all it needs to. (7/10)
Actor Review
Damian Walshe-Howling: Luke expert on the water who takes charge once the boat capsizes and tries to lead his friends to safety, he keeps everyone calm in the water and has to keep watch for the sharks. Solid lead performance, showing good leadership skills. (7/10)
Gyton Grantley: Matt friend of Luke’s who returns to take his girlfriend and sister on a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. He enjoys the holiday but it is clear to see that Luke is the expert in the water and after they get lost in the ocean he makes a big mistake. Solid performance as the slightly clueless lost at sea man. (7/10)
Adrienne Pickering: Suzie girlfriend of Matt who has come to enjoy the sun and scenery. She joins the swim because she trusts her boyfriend who trusts Luke. She does a good job but is mainly there for added scream value. (6/10)
Zoe Naylor: Kate sister of Matt and former partner of Luke who goes to see if there is anything left with her former partner, she is most reluctant to go on the swim and her nerves help show how terrifying it is. She does a good job to convince with her nervous performance. (7/10)
Kieran Darcy Naylor: Warren the man who likes to fish and drive the boat, I am not sure if he was meant to be the captain or just another friend, but he ends up stay on the capsized boat not wanting to get in the water because of the sharks. Only a small support performance here as he left on the boat. (5/10)
Director Review: Andrew Traucki – Good direction to create a tense horror from the moment the boat flips until the credits you will be left near the edge of your seats. (7/10)
Horror: The idea of being left in the middle of the ocean would be terrifying but add in the sharks it makes it one hell of a scary situation. (9/10)
Thriller: You literally don’t know what will happen with the people stranded and the build-up during the shark attacks are very well built-up. (9/10)
Settings: Great setting to make the idea terrifying. (10/10)
Suggestion: This is one for the horror fans to try, if you like the isolated trapped films this will work out for you. (Horror Fans Try)
Best Part: The suspense being built-up throughout.
Worst Part: You kind of know the outcome but you have to work out who will go first.
Believability: Based on a real event, but none of the characters are real, I guess the idea of being stuck in the ocean is a real reality and the chances of being hunted by sharks is too. (7/10)
