Scott Snyder

American Vampire: The Long Road To Hell

By: Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $6.99

The Lowdown: American Vampire has been on hiatus while Snyder becomes one of DC’s new golden boys, but he still delivers a nice one shot for us. It stars Travis Kidd, the American Graffiti/Grease esque vampire killer who likes to bite back. He’s a damn cool character so I’m looking forward to it. This time he is tracking a Bonnie and Clyde/True Romance style, newly turned couple.

Batman

Batman #21

By: Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $3.99

The Lowdown: This is the second time Snyder is appearing on this list for this week and it won’t be the last. His new Batman arc kicks off. It’s called Year Zero, and it is about retelling the origin yet again of the Dark Knight. I suppose it is important considering Batman’s personal timeline is one of the more confusing since the reboot. Yet at the same time Snyder has made this sound more like that video game Arkham Origins, where it is not Batman at the very beginning, but it is going to be about some of his earliest run-ins.

Green Lantern

Green Lantern Corps #21

By: Joshua Hale Fialkov, Bernard Chang

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $2.99

The Lowdown: This is the first issue of a different corner of the Green Lantern franchise ever since Geoff Johns left the brand. It is written by a former I, Vampire writer and is about Guy Garnder dealing with whatever connection he still has to the Red Lanterns.

Batman

Suicide Squad #21

By: Alex Kot, Marco Rudy, Jason Pearson

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $2.99

The Lowdown: Last month, Suicide Squad got itself a new writing team, and not an issue too soon. The book was definitely getting a little tired, and it needed to check some new directions. The most interesting of those directions is the inclusion of James Gordon Jr, Batgirl’s psycho brother.

Superman

Superman Unchained #1

By: Scott Snyder, Jim Lee

Publisher: DC Comics

Price: $4.99

The Lowdown: And here is Snyder’s number 3. He said he got asked “Who do you want to work on next?” thanks to his success on Batman. Everyone thought he was going to go with a more inherently dark title, so we were all surprised when he said he really wanted to work on Superman. So DC went ahead and gave Superman a whole new title, just so Snyder could write for it.

Crow Curare #1 (of 3)

By: James O’Barr, Antoine Dode

Publisher: IDW Publishing

Price: $3.99

The Lowdown: James O’Barr, the creator of The Crow, writes a new comic based on a retired Detroit cop obsessed with a cold case when he starts getting help of the young victim, brought back as The Crow.

Peter Panzerfaust #11

By: Kurtis J. Wiebe, Tyler Jenkins

Publisher: Image Comics

Price: $3.50

The Lowdown: I feel like I haven’t given this title a spotlight for a while. I wonder if they have even been publishing. The issue number still seems pretty low. It’s a damn good book though so if you haven’t yet, jump on here. It is not as gimmicky as the premise (WWII era Peter Pan) suggests.

Avengers

Thor God Of Thunder #9

By: Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Price: $3.99

The Lowdown: Three Thors for the price of one.

X-Men

Wolverine and the X-Men #31

By: Jason Aaron, Nick Bradshaw

Publisher: Marvel Comics

Price: $3.99

The Lowdown: The Hellfire Academy is one of the coolest new developments. I’m sure a lot of people would disagree, but I think it will be pretty damn interesting. This new Hellfire Academy is getting some really interesting staff members (like Mystique, Mojo, Sauron, and Master Pandemonium).
