The Power of American Pistachios

American Pistachio Growers organized a virtual knowledge session on 27th May 2020 with Dr Mike Roussell, who is a globally renowned Nutrition Consultant, author, and advisor from the USA. It was an interesting session wherein he spoke about the importance of Protein intake for everyone. He also mentioned about a new analysis that states U.S. grown roasted pistachios meet the generally accepted definition as a "complete protein," meaning they join the ranks of a small number of plant proteins such as quinoa, chickpeas, and soybeans that have become popular among vegetarians and consumers who wish to move away from animal proteins.

The Power of American Pistachios

The Food and Drug Administration defines a "complete" protein as a food that contains adequate amounts of all nine essential amino acids (the protein building blocks that our body does not naturally produce and need from food). The protein quality of pistachios was assessed for the first time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The study determined that pistachios contain all 9 essential amino acids necessary for supporting growth and maintaining health for those 5 years and older, therefore they are a "complete" protein.

Sumit Saran, In-Country Marketing Representative, American Pistachio Growers added, "At American Pistachio Growers, we aim to inform and educate Indian consumers about the power of pistachios. Our analysis shows that most children in India do not consume pistachios. The fact that these nuts are a "complete" protein means that they are extremely essential for young bodies and minds to consume and we are working to spread awareness."
