Most Portuguese take sugar in their coffee. Granted, Portuguese espresso is strong, and sugar takes the edge off. (I take the edge off with milk). And then the coffee is typically paired with a sweet of some kind — a pastry, a tart, or a little cake — which is often topped with a generous sprinkling of icing sugar.
There is no shortage of sweet stuff to take the edge off the coffee, in case two packets of sugar (which always comes with the coffee) doesn’t do it. I found these unposted photos of sweet things in my archives and thought I should let you know the sugar situation. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll need some willpower.
