The Plunge

The waves beneath her were just like the state of her mind. The dangerous twirl and rushes of the river beneath her just enforced upon her to pursue her decision. Her parents’ words kept running through her mind.

“You are just a woman. You should follow what the other women in our village are doing. You should not do something to bring us shame. You will be an outcast in the village and even we will not help you if you do something like that.”

Her neighbors and relatives said the same thing and supported her parents’ feelings. She did not have anyone to support her. She was all alone.

But she was sure she was doing the right thing. From her vantage point from top of the cliff, she looked down at the mighty sea beneath her. She couldn’t confide in anyone other than the sea. After all, it is said that a sea is also a woman. And a woman can be destructive, too.

She wanted to end this vicious cycle. As she was watching, the crashes of the water beneath her broke a rock into two. The fatality of the rock in front of her eyes encouraged her decision. She knew that this jump might end her life as she knows it. But she had had enough of the societal pressure.

And she took the plunge, thus becoming the first deep diver in her village.
