The Photographer Magazine Lockdown Feature

Pushing Myself Professionally and Personally With Photography

The Photographer Magazine editor was after unique Lockdown stories and strong imagery to feature in the lastest bumper issue so I grabbed the opportunity and shared my own Covid family holiday (and kept my fingers crossed).

Not only was it about a very rare family vacation after a worldwide lockdown amidst a pandemic (which we now realise was REALLY lucky) but about my own photography journey.

Street Photography - Patience and Practice

As a documentary family photographer I've been curious about street photography for some time. Pouring over books and blogs about Vivian Maier as well as stalking some incredibly talented street photographers on Instagram.

Yet I felt incredibly nervous about the idea of trying it myself.

So, the idea of capturing this unique time of being one of the first tourists after lockdown seemed the perfect time to push myself and my photography.

Despite the initial nerves (and Lee hating the idea of me 'working' on holiday) I really enjoyed slowing down and observing the strangeness that Covid19 had caused to a typical family holiday.

Empty beaches and pools, face coverings and masks and quiet streets all made it an interesting story to document and share.

It got a lot of interest on social media with people asking me to share more of my story and how I felt about travelling in such a worrying and uncertain time.

You can see more on our family holiday during a pandemic here, including some of the images featured in The Photographer for the editorial piece...
