The Phantom of the Opera, opening Aug25, extends Manila run with 16 more shows; Filipino tenor to play Piangi
“The Phantom of the Opera” will have its season extended until September 30 at the CCP Main Theater, adding 16 more shows, the producers announced recently.
The longest-running musical on Broadway, and now on its 26th year in London’s West End, “The Phantom of the Opera” is acclaimed as the world’s most successful musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s masterpiece has been seen by more than 130 million people worldwide. Audiences in The Philippines will be able to experience this legendary musical for the first time from August 25.
Joining the international cast and orchestra are some of Manila’s talented local musicians who have been specially selected by Guy Simpson, the musical director, during auditions conducted in Manila earlier this year. Alongside these Filipino musicians is the talented Filipino tenor, Dondi Ong, who will perform the role of Piangi in some performances.
Ong holds a degree in Music, major in Voice, from the UP College of Music. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and class valedictorian. As a performer, he has played lead and prominent roles in various Filipino plays, zarzuelas and musicals and has traveled to the US, Europe and Japan to perform for foreign audiences.

In announcing the season extension, producer James Cundall, CEO of Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, said “It is an enormous privilege to bring 'The Phantom of the Opera' to The Philippines for its premiere. I have always believed that audiences here will embrace this unforgettable show and love it as much as I do, so I am delighted to see such a strong demand for tickets, and to be able to offer 16 more performances.”
With 130 cast, crew and orchestra members, jaw-dropping scenery, breathtaking special effects and more than 230 costumes by international designer, the late Maria Björnson, “The Phantom of the Opera” delivers a world-class production.
“This touring production is as fine as any version you might see in the West End or on Broadway—it is the same superb design, and we invest a great deal to ensure it is of the highest standards,” said Tim McFarlane, Managing Director of The Really Useful Company Asia Pacific.
Asian Hospital Charities Inc. will open the season on August 25, 8 p.m., as part of its fundraising to help support the medical needs of the underprivileged. Book your tickets at the Asian Hospital Lobby or call 7719000 local 8202 and take this opportunity to extend your hand to those who are in need.
“The Phantom of the Opera” runs August 25-September 30 at CCP Main Theater, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City.
