The Paper: 30th Anniversary- Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Marisa Tomei
Quick Take: Not my first time through Ron Howard’s The Paper, which feels like some alternate reality nowadays. Trying to get kids to accept that a film about newspaper journalism is full of actors who are mostly still alive (Yes, Robert Duvall is still kicking, but RIP Jason Robards), and they see in films all the time, and when this was made… it was not a historical period piece. This is not The Post, or even All The President’s Men. The Paper takes place in the year it was released. It talks and tackles issues that were currently facing print journalism, before they realized they would be damn near torpedoed by the internet. Seeing cast members Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid, and Jason Alexander, this underrated 1994 gem tackles the personal lives, as well as the fight for the truth, against the strictest of deadlines. At what cost. I did catch this on Netflix with audio description, though it isn’t there now. It is proof it exists, and hopefully it will come around so we don’t forget this film the same way we’ve turned our backs on the subject matter. For more, check out my video.
