One of the many great joys of being a London Walks guide is showing this famous Trafalgar Square statue (below) to our wonderful groups of French students and asking them, "Who's this?"
The answer is almost always the same…"Napoleon!"
I tried the same line of questioning on a group of students from Sweden last week and, sure enough, most of them chorused: "Napoleon!"
Before I had a chance to correct them, one of their own number spoke out on my behalf:
"That's not Napoleon!" he cried, "That's the opposite of Napoleon!"
I rather liked his description!
A London Walk costs £10 – £8 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
