A little reminder to the people who say Livraria Lello (1906) is the oldest bookstore in Porto… it’s not, that would be Moreira da Costa (1902) beside Hotel Infante Sagres.
Oh boy, have I seen some tall tales about Porto. I’ve not really kept track of them because there are simply too many, but I should have started a list of the biggest ones. For example, someone wrote that J.K. Rowling lived in Porto for 10 years (she was here less than two). Then there are the articles like this one in the Sun (UK) where the journalist mistakes the Luís I Bridge for the Maria Pia Bridge three times.
Porto actually has quite a number of bookstores, with stock ranging from antique to rare to just plain old. Despite the established market of ebooks, the printed word continues to thrive here in Portugal and it’s something I want to point out through pictures — with better timing than I had the day I shot the Moreira da Costa photo.
