Story: The Nun II starts in the aftermath of a string of attacks on religious figures across Europe. This leads to the church turning to Sister Irene (Farmiga) to track down the demon causing the attacks. She is joined by younger nun Sister Debra (Reid) as they investigate. Elsewhere, Maurice (Bloquet) has taken a role in a boarding school inside a former monastery.

As the Sisters figure out what is going on, Maurice is unaware of his connection to Valak. This sees Valak starting to haunt the boarding school as the Sisters rush to stop it before it kills again.

Verdict on The Nun II

The Nun II is the latest addition to the Conjuring Universe. It picks up a few years after the events of the previous movie, with Sister Irene in a new monastery and Maurice traveling Europe. However, Valak has attached itself to Maurice to continue its rampage across Europe.

This is a good sequel to continue building the legacy of Valak. It does seem to split the story into two, one following the boarding school slowly getting more haunted. While the second follows the two Sisters searching for answers. It is all connected though, as Sister Irene’s connection to Valak is still showing her the way.

We get great visual scares, using the tight areas and the imposing figure of the nun to bring out the biggest tension-filled sequences. The visual scares are easily the highlight of the film, even if the final battle feels rushed and overly chaotic to follow.

One thing that should get a big mention, is that we only have two nuns trying to stop the evil. It has removed the priest’s side of it, going for a different approach to stopping evil. The cast does do a great job throughout the movie, with the returning Taissa Farmiga and newcomer Storm Reid working well together.

Final ThoughtsThe Nun II is filled with scares and continues to build on the universe.
