The counterpart to Cape Palliser (where we have been in January) on the North Island, Cape Farewell is the northern tip of the South Island. To the east, it stretches out into the ocean and forms a 26km long sand spit. Farewell Spit is accessible for short walks and some tour buses go out further towards the narrow tip.
The road to Cape Farewell is lined with wild hills, the small fingers of Kahurangi National Park, reaching out north to the ocean.
The actual Cape is just a few steps away from the end of the gravel road leading there. The lush grass of the sheep paddocks abruptly drops down into the sea, forming cliffs and exposing bare rock. The South Islands northern tip is marked by a massive rock wall, ending in a little arc standing amidst the waves. A very nice spot to watch the sunset!
