The Next Step...

By Emmielois @emmielois
The next step... What a week it has been. I think I have experienced every emotion possible; all the feels have been well and truly felt.
Most of you will have been aware of the fact that Thursday just gone (the 14th) was A-Level results day here in England. A day of joy and celebration for some, and sheer bloody panic for others.
I was of the latter.
Without going into too much information, I was gutted to find out that I didn't get my grades to get to university. Don't get me wrong, my grades are not bad, just not enough, which in a sense is even more annoying!
Usually the stress and anxiety goes away for those who open their emails on the morning and find that they have got what they wanted. For those who don't the whole day takes a different course and gets even more stressful and scary. Everything becomes unsure for a while, which is a big thing to adjust to especially for students who have been so use to being in a 'safe' environment where they know 100% where they will be in September at the start of term, or what subjects they will be taking.
Anyway, I am trying to be aware of talking about it too much, because there is a point where you have to pick yourself up and just move on. As a person, you are defined more by how you deal with situations and how you overcome adversity.
But, as this is the topic of discussion at the moment (apart from the fact that tickets for London Fashion Week have just been put on sale ohmygodohmygodohmygod) I reckoned it was a good idea to address it on here.
For those of you who are going through the same thing as me at the moment, or if you are reading this a year from now and are scared about not getting what you want on results day, here are some tips.
1. DO NOT PANIC. Keep calm. Initially it may feel like there is no way out, but there will always be another option. You just have to look for it. Or perhaps you already know what it is.
2. HAVE A BACK UP PLAN. I cannot stress this enough. I am guilty of not having a solid back up plan in place this year, and my results day would have been a lot smoother if I did, so learn from my mistake!
3. DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, NOT WHAT OTHERS WANT YOU TO DO. Remember this, because it is probably the most important tip I can give you. It is your future, no one else's, and no one else should dictate what they want you to do with your life. Initially, parents and teachers want you to be secure so they may well try to direct you along a route that gets you in a more secure setting as soon as possible. This is all well and good and it is because they care about you, but at the end of the day, if you are in a university on a course that you are not particularly fussed about, it is a waste of time and a lot of money when you could have been busy doing something more productive that would get you to where you wanted.
4. DONT MEASURE YOURSELF AGAINST OTHER PEOPLE. Life is not a 'one size fits all' situation. Yes, it is scary to see all your friends going off in one direction and you being stuck in another or feeling left behind. But I am a big believer in everything happening for a reason; the path that your peers might be on may not be the same path you are destined to be on. But in the end, everything will be fine. Trust me.
5. EMBRACE IT. Whether it may be going to a different university than planned, or perhaps taking an impromptu gap year... just enjoy it! Think of the positives that come with it. In my case, I might be doing a third year at college to improve my grades, but I am actually looking forward to it. I would be able to blog a lot more. My work load would decrease dramatically so I would be able to focus more on the things I need to do. I'm planning to try and get as much work experience I can and write for more people and try and get a job (so I can buy nice clothes to show you in outfit posts!)  So even though it wasn't what I was hoping to do, I am accepting reality and embracing what is to come and so should you, whatever it may be!
If you are going to university this year, I wish you all the luck in the world (you lucky, lucky people)
If you are not going to university this year, keep calm and carry on.
...that's what I will be trying to do!
