Against a backdrop of coconuts and verdant trees, these feather-crowned men enchant guests with their music.
November 2013: After about an hour of land travel from the capital of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby, we arrived at the town of Kairuku Rural and were ushered to a paradise-like seaside place called “March Girls”. I quickly surveyed the surroundings for something to photograph and, while the beach looked inviting, my full attention was immediately captured by this group of traditionally-clothed men playing colorful guitars and singing sweet melodies which a group of women sang to and accompanied with a dance.
Singing a melody that to me sounded like those of nymphs calling out from the sea, the ladies gracefully danced as their grass skirts, with each gentle turn, softly swayed and flowed like waves in the sea.
The men heartily sang their pieces and, while I did not understand a single word in their songs, I felt the lovely feeling being conveyed
As the men sang and the ladies danced, a boy joined the show and likewise danced to the beat
And then young girls, one while trying a grass skirt, also tried to sway their hips to the tune. That was when I knew that their songs and dances were not much for the show but simply for the love of music and for having fun with the rest of the family.
