Armbian is a lightweight Debian or Ubuntu Linux based operating system specialized for ARM development boards. It supports a wide variety of SBCs, such as Orange Pi, Banana Pi, Odroid, PINE64, including SoCs from Allwinner, Rockchip, etc.
Armbian 20.08 'Caple' is the last Release which comes with major kernel updates, new card support, enhancements, and bug fixes. We'll take a look-
What's new in Armbian 20.08?
Continuing to improve the login screen, 20.08 now includes a more user-friendly first login screen. You must now log in and change your root password when you log in for the first time.
In addition, it also provides an automatic login option which you can enable by filling in some information fields like new root password, user creation and time zone selection.
On the SBC and SoC side, Armbian 20.08 has added a new powerful ARM Helios64 card powered by Rockchip RK3399 SoC and designed for Network Attached Storage (NAS).
Not only that, it also introduced support for the Rockchip RK322X SoC, Rockchip RK3328 based on Rock Pi E and the NanoPi NEO3 single board computer. Even for the older Allwinner A10, A20, and A31 chips, v20.08 added support for HDMI audio.
Another major change that Armbian 20.08 includes is the addition of optional kernel booting. Linux Core Bootsplash is a graphic replacement for the quiet boot option, usually displaying the logo and spinner animation when the system boots.
Also, it made a new parameter PACKAGE_LIST to install bluetooth packages or any other custom package on a card specific package list.
Finally, Armbian 20.08 also fixed the following bugs:
- Rock PI 4B 1Gb won't boot modern kernel / u-boot
- Default SElinux policy missing
- Armbian configuration failed to change kernel
- Banana PI R2 does not start at all
- Fix WiFi on Nanopi M4V2
- Fixed random MAC on H3 cards
- EDID firmware support by users
- Increase the address margin for the initial virtual disk
