The Monotonous Diet

I often hear about the dangers of programs like the Atkins or Paleo diet. It requires very specific food choices to manage food intolerance or weight loss.

We’re not about debating the merits of the individual programs. But it has highlighted the issue of having a monotonous diet and the potential side effects. Even if you have been directed to specifically exclude certain food types from your diet.

Food Allergy vs. Intolerance

Do not confuse food intolerance with food allergies. While the symptoms are alike, the cause of both disorders differs, as well as the treatments.

Allergies can cause intense reactions including skin rashes, sneezing fits, swelling of the lips and throat, and difficulty in breathing. All of which can manifest quickly. Occurring almost immediately after ingesting the food in question, these symptoms are commonly recognizable as food allergy.

Food intolerance is invisible to your senses. It can cause a series of slow onset symptoms that don’t seem to be related to specific foods until you are tested.  The reactions to intolerance can occur from between 8 and 72 hours after consumption of the offending food or additive, so are more difficult to pinpoint than food allergies. People may develop intolerance to any amount of food.

Testing Made Easy

Luckily for us the technology for testing for allergies and intolerances has experienced some incredible advances and companies such as ImuPro are now providing a range of comprehensive tests from a simple blood sample.

The test tells you which foods to exclude from your diet and which foods you should eat moderately. Some people that made the changes after an intolerance test have experienced incredible turnarounds in symptoms.

Nik from Melbourne tested and found out that he could not tolerate thirty different types of food. After elimination the symptoms of diarrhoea and bloating. He tested the results by introducing some of the ‘problem foods’ and the symptoms reappeared.

The Same Diet Forever…. Absolutely Not!

One of the myths that people have about identifying a range of foods they are intolerant to is that they will be forever stuck on a limited diet of boring foods they don’t really like. Research is now coming to light, that people who adopt an elimination style diet, but stick to a narrow range of foods run the risk of developing intolerances to those foods as well.

one thing that surprised me when I studied the Paleo diet a while ago. To really follow the diet, you have to change your foods for one very important reason – availability of seasonal foods.

Eating Seasonally

Seasonal Diet For Better Health

The ease with which out of season foods can be imported means that if you wanted to eat the exact same foods year round, you could. The key to successfully managing a food intolerance in the long term is to is vary and rotating the foods within an approved type.

Humans were meant to eat seasonally, and even if you have a 100% ‘healthy’ diet, you still need to rotate your foods. Just as your body would stop responding at the gym if you only ever did the one exercise over and over, your body needs the variation in food types as well.

Keeping Your Diet Varied

It doesn’t always have to be a challenge though, ImuPro client Glenda (surname withheld) found that “While changing my diet so significantly was a huge challenge in the beginning, I really enjoyed exploring new foods and looking for new recipes or variations on the old ones.”

By having a varied diet and rotating foods, we have a much better chance of stopping new intolerances developing. The only way to really find out what is happening is by a blood test. It will pick up exactly what foods your body is reacting to.
