the Monolith is the Cinema Screen - Rob Ager Guts 2001

I've featured Rob Ager's amazing film analysis several times on free planet, but this one is especially portentous.
In his analysis of Stanley Kubrick/Arthur C Clarke's 2001, Ager links the black monolith's 1:4:9 proportions to the Panavision70 format of 2.2:1 i.e. n:4:8.8 but there's a Z-depth missing, the initial 1 of the monolith, pushing a unit measurement back into the screen - we never see around the cinema screen. "It's a trap!" as Star Wars tells us...

I like the way Ager uses every opportunity to present the 1:4:9 to the viewer of his analysis, choosing Panavision70 shots to place within his youtube frame, showing how 2001 puts perspective depth into the hypnotic influence of the monolithic cinematic experience. Such fascination with the mind control or propaganda aspect of mainstream cinema leads us neatly into another Rob Ager analysis, of EYES WIDE SHUT.
Abre los ojos, mi amigos!
