The Men Of The 2013 Emmy Awards

The 65th edition of the Primetime Emmy Awards took place at the Nokia theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California on 22 September 2013. It was, as expected, a star-studded event and everyone from around the globe who (by the miracle of syndication) is up-to-date with the American primetime TV shows could see their favorite stars there. As usual, there were winners and, let’s say, just those honored to be nominated, but we want to focus on the fashion that was showcased both on stage and on the red carpet.

While the ladies wore from the highly simple yet extremely elegant dresses and gowns to really wacky outfits, the men were really a surprise, giving us almost the same outfit over and over again. It’s great that they are recognizable people, because if they were not we would not have been able to tell them apart.

We often talk on the blog about the democratization of men’s style and fashion. And this being said, we can say that the 2013 Primetime Emmys were quite a disappointment. We would think that since in the last seasons we could see so much color, texture, pattern and shine on the runway, you would see at least some of it reflected in the public opinion.

We could see a lot of black and white (mostly black) in very simple and elegant proportions and cuts, with a careful attention to detail and shape. But all men wore the same thing basically. Yes, some did wear a bow tie, others a tie, others none, some wore a pocket square, others did not, but that was the overall variation.

It appears that the idea of men wearing something other than classic suits is still not absorbed by the mainstream and the general opinion, despite the men’s runway shows and all the glamor designers propose every season. Seriously, it’s not like there was no choice.

We’re wondering what this says about us as a culture, when in theory men’s fashion has really taken off, but not so much in practical life. How come?
