The Joy of Being Little

By Mba @mbartoloabela

God the Father loves souls who are little, because it is when we become little, both with Him and others, that we open up space for Him to carry out fully His function as Father, in our daily lives. Letting His Majesty, Glory and greatness appear, without hindrance from ourselves or at least a minimum of hindrance, when we become anew like children. However, becoming, being and remaining little is not easy to achieve, because it goes directly against the grain of everything we have been socialized into believing and being since childhood, in our post-Christian societies.

Specifically, many of us are taught that we need to be winners, irrespective of the cost involved in such a process, both for ourselves and others; otherwise, we will be regarded as losers in the eyes of the world. However, we cannot be winners in this sense of the term, if we truly want God to live in us on a daily basis, as such a set of heart and mind only makes our Father shun us in disgust and His Holy Spirit flee, while we virtually force Jesus to re-experience the pain of His Passion and Crucifixion, when we proceed to receive Him in the Eucharist in such a state. We need to be in the world but not of the world, because we cannot belong both to the world and to God, even though many erroneously think that we can have our cake and it eat – a veritable fallacy.

We need to choose, through our own free-will, in whose camp we really wish to live and belong, for if we sincerely desire to gain access to the fullness of our inheritance who Is the Triune God (Paul VI, 1964), by returning to live in the Divine Heart and Will of God the Father, we need to seriously set aside our egos and our selves, to become and remain little for the rest of our lives. The littlest of the little, in fact, so that we can be winners in essence, rather than in name only. Like that our Father becomes attracted to us by our humility and decides that He is, indeed, going to come and live in the hearts of our souls, rather than simply being with us during the mundane routines of our daily lives. When we become little in such a manner, our Father inundates us with His felt Love, Peace, Joy and Happiness: the love, peace, joy and happiness of Heaven, which are incomparable to anything one may experience on earth.

Moreover, the freedom and liberty that accompany our becoming and being little can never be matched by the so-called freedom and liberty provided by mankind. Only in littleness can we ever hope and be truly joyful and happy, regardless of what the world may think of us and our choices, because only in littleness can we intimately come to know and live in God the Father. We were conceived by Him to be for Him, since prior to the beginning of time. But for many of us this is the hardest thing to achieve, although by no means impossible, because it represents and is the epitome of counter-culturalness.
