A new partnership with Paternoster
Ever since ‘The Disciple’s Way’ way was first launched in January 2012, I have been trying to find out where its onward journey might take it. The course was tremendously successful, and many encouraged me to look at publishing it as a course in its own right.Two different publishers subsequently expressed an interest. With the second, I tried converting the course into something else altogether and it ended up looking like a bit of a botch job – a new extension built onto an old house.
My sabbatical came and went, and it gave me the opportunity to dwell deep and long on the motif of pilgrimage and the call of discipleship. When at last I picked up the writer’s pen (keyboard) once again it was simply because the ideas were crying out for voice and I started to write them down. At the time I did so in a speculative way, floating them gently on the waters of the blogosphere to see where the current would take them.
At this point, enter Paternoster, a branch of Authentic Media, who liked what they saw. The ideas became a proposal on a book entitled ‘#Journey’, whose aim would be to look at discipleship through the lens of discipleship:
“An accessible and thought-provoking look at the nature of discipleship through the lens of pilgrimage. What do we learn about God whilst on the move which could not be learnt whilst stationary?”
Today a contract has been signed, and over the next 12 – 18 months the ideas will find their respective voices and learn to sing in harmony together. The book will draw deeply on the imagery of pilgrimage and the narrative history of Scripture’s inescapable journey motif. Each chapter will provide material for reflection. There is an idea sketching itself somewhere on a blank wall in the back of my mind about gorgeous line drawings depicting the road, but we shall have to see…
