The iPad 3: Smarter, faster, sleeker – or will it just have a better camera?

What will the iPad 3 look like?

The stakes are being upped in the tablet wars once more. Yes, the internet is aswirl with rumours about the iPad 3 – the biggest being that the display will be improved, possibly even given an HD screen. And the iPad 2’s only been out since spring, poor lamb. Rumours are based on the manufacturing of certain components in factories in Asia.

So what will it be this time? Will it be able to do your washing, tell the future, iron your shirts and take your children to school? Probably not. In fact, most commentators agree, it won’t be noticeably different from the iPad2. Most agree, however, that it will have a better camera.

We know nothing. But Adrian Kingsley-Hughes in The Washington Post said, in no uncertain terms, that we know “NOTHING” about it. He says that the most we can hope for is a March announcement, with pre-orders available shortly after. It won’t be in January; nor will there be a price cut. It won’t be “smaller or thinner”, either. There may be more storage and bigger RAM, and better battery power. What is likely is that there will be a better camera. But it won’t have a USB port.

But here’s what we can guess. Going deep into the technical aspects, Techradar said there might be a “retina display.” There might be some “nifty dual LED lightbar technology” to deal with brightness issues. There could also be a “Near Field Communications” chip, which would allow the gadget to “take over” nearby Macs. There might even be a “Thunderbolt” port. And there might even be more than one iPad 3 – we could get iPads 3.1 and 3.2. So expect the rumor mill to swirl faster and faster as the year progresses. Keep your eye on Asian factory output, says Periscope.
