The Importance of Blocking Point-shots

By Kicks @Chrisboucher73
So many scoring chances-against can be avoided simply by blocking point shots. Conversely, many scoring-chances can be produced by getting shots through to the net. The first sheet of data expresses the numbers produced by the Montreal Canadiens defensemen when attempting to get shots through to the net. The second  sheet shows the data produced by the Habs wingers when attempting to block opposition shots from the point.
'ES POS' = games the Habs outscored the opposition at even-strength'ES NEG' = games where the Habs were outscored by the opposition at ES
'WINS' = games the Habs won
'LOSSES' = games the Habs lost

Habs d-men have actually averaged more attempted shots in games they were outscored or lost. It's the number of shots that get through to the net that increased in games where the Habs enjoyed some success. In fact, 46.9% of the d-core's shots attempts were blocked in games where the Habs were outscored by the opposition at even-strength, while only 34.9% of the shots were blocked when the Habs outscored the opposition. The trend also occurs in wins versus losses, as 43.5% of Montreal defensemen's shots were blocked during Habs losses, while only 37.2% were blocked in wins.
In terms of percentage of shots that make it through to the net, defensemen were able to get 42.5% of their shots through in games where they outscored the opposition at ES, but only 31.9% when they were outscored. Once again, the trend continues during wins and losses, as the defensemen were able to get 40.5% of their shots through during wins, but only 32.4% in losses.

The thought that a team that has a lot of blocked shots is struggling with puck-possession usually holds true. That said, blocked shots from wingers are an absolute necessity to minimizing scoring chances-against. Montreal wingers have averaged 0.047 blocked shots per-minute played in games where the Habs outscored the opposition at even-strength, but only 0.033 when they were outscored.  Once again, the trend holds true in wins versus losses, as Habs wingers averaged 0.044 blocked shots per-minute played in wins, and only 0.035 during losses.
