The Ideal Owls

By Vikasacharya

The ideal Owls

Owls possess large forward-facing eyes and ear-holes; a hawk-like beak; a flat face; and usually a conspicuous circle of feathers, a facial disc, around each eye. Owls cannot turn their heads all the way around (360 degrees); however, they can turn their heads 270 degrees.  Humans can only turn their heads 180 degrees.  Owls are able to turn their heads further than humans because they have 14 vertebrae (bones) in their neck while humans only have seven.  Owls need to be able to turn their heads this far because their eyes are fixed in the socket, which means they cannot move their eyes at all.
