The British Council, in partnership with the Philippine Educational Theatre Association, brings “Hip Hop Shakespeare” to Manila for a series of workshops and performances from July 3 to 6.
Founded in 2008 by MOBO award-winning hip hop artist Akala, The Hip hop Shakespeare Company (THSC) is a music theater production company that explores the social, cultural and linguistic parallels between the works of William Shakespeare and that of modern-day rappers.
Launched in 2009 with the support of British actor Sir Ian McKellen, THSC delivers education programs that offer young people a different view of the arts and, ultimately, themselves. THSC also produces interactive live music events/theater productions showcasing the work of up-and-coming young talents who share the stage with established artists and actors.
While in Manila, Akala will deliver a workshop at the PETA Theatre Centre on July 3-5. The workshop is for people with interest/skill in rapping, singing, spoken word poetry and acting. He will also have live performances at PETA on July 5-6.
For inquiries on the workshop and performance tickets, call the British Council 5553000 or PETA 7256244, or visit www.britishcouncil.org.ph and www.petatheater.com
