Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, in the 2021 impeachment, voted to convict Trump for a violent attempt to overthrow the government. Despite that astonishing deed, voters returned Trump to office.
Of course he’s hated Cassidy, one of his innumerable hatreds. Unlike most Republicans targeted by Trump, Cassidy had the fortitude to seek re-election. In Sunday’s primary, he couldn’t even make the runoff, placing a dismal third.
Trump gloated, typically calling Cassidy a “disloyal disaster,” and “a terrible guy.” Cassidy commented, “Insults only bother me if they come from somebody of character and integrity.” Touché.
The top Louisiana vote-getter, Trump-endorsed Julia Letlow, thanked “a very special man . . . the best president this country has ever had.” Actually, for a Trump cultist, a mild encomium; the standard locution is “the GREATEST president in U.S. history.”
Yes. Not Washington, Lincoln, or FDR, but Trump.
The man who’s thrown our civic culture in the toilet (see above). Wrecked much of our government and institutions; torn down much of the White House. Sent prices soaring with economically idiotic tariffs and by blundering into a stupid war he’s got no clue for ending. Shredded rule of law and weaponized the Justice Department to persecute political opponents. Antagonized our best foreign friends, crashed our alliances, and made us a globally reviled rogue nation. Sent murderous thugs into our streets and even homes. Brutalized immigrants. A convicted felon and adjudicated sexual abuser. Far the most corrupt president ever. Responsible for the January 6 assault on our democracy itself. It goes on and on. All propelled by a firehose of lies.
Some Trump worshippers posture thus as dishonestly cynical pandering. But too many truly believe it. Recalling the ending to Nineteen Eighty-Four: Winston finally loves Big Brother.
These people are literally insane. Barking mad. And they talk about “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The greatest president in history. The very fact that he’s made many Americans actually think this shows just how terrible his effect on this country has been.
