“Whatever method we may use to measure the growth in science, whether it be number of journals, number of articles, number of patents, it is clear that the trend is still inexorably upwards. And increasingly the language of publication is English.

The position of say, German, earlier this century in a discipline like chemistry is no longer what it was. The same trend is evident in French and since the demise of the Soviet Union also in Russian. The former Soviet-bloc countries in which Russian used to be the first foreign language now see its place taken by English. In Hungary, for example, where students now have a free choice of foreign language, English is now clearly in first place, followed by German, then French.

A massive program of retraining Russian teachers to teach English has meant that most of the younger generation is now learning English.”

This introductory paragraph of a certain page where it details the elements of scientific English written by Alistair Wood is honestly a mind-opening remark. In fair view indeed, when it comes to science, English has taken its lingua franca. No matter how much other foreign language like German and Russian insist that theirs is the language of science, English today has taken its course of influence even in this systematized body of knowledge.

There are some who takes the chance to travel abroad and go to English-speaking countries as they take English classes Miami perhaps. Indeed, the widest and most influential language we have today has penetrated almost all aspects, basically including scientific publishing.

Yet, at the same time, also gives you a basic foundation at how English has really been quite essential in all aspects of our lives.
