From the plethora of collections that have been released recently, the Givenchy autumn-winter 2017-18 menswear collection has had a magnetic effect on us.
At first glance, the collection does not seem to bring something extremely special to the table. We often see classic pieces reinterpreted and are happy when they are given a new and original twist.
However, this time it was more than just that. While the collection consisted of the “classic pieces that were reinterpreted”, there was something about it that really caught our eye. Upon reflection, it was the newness that made the difference.
If one takes a good look at the collection, which was inspired by a combination of stars and stripes with Victorian aesthetics, you will see the genius of Riccardo Tisci. Givenchy’s Creative Director brings a modern futurist-gothic interpretation to classic clothing, but in a truly updated way.
His clothes play with illusions and therefore result in interesting effects. They are oversized, yet fitted, they are loose, yet cropped, tailored, yet draped.
The play with shapes and mixes is interesting, in a way, there’s theory, there’s nothing spectacular: a low scoop neck sweatshirt over a tank top, but in actuality, it’s really unique and special. Some of the details on the clothes seem to be flowing over the models, they have a life of their own, yet they are connected with the garments.
And this is why this collection is so special. It makes use of items we’ve all seen and worn, but that are styled and transformed so strongly that they become new. There’s checkers, shirts and jackets, but they’re nothing like the ones you have in your closet.
And, when you thought you’ve seen it all, you discover that a man can wear a tank top over a shirt. How come nobody thought of this before? The effect is great!
Different stripes are mixed together, yet the effect is not that of an illusion, but of cohesion, there are heavy knits with surprising bulges that surprisingly don’t disturb the outfits and childlike prints look serious and masculine.
This extremely upbeat collection was energetic and strong, which is a bit different from what Tisci usually shows. The designer also confirmed this position, explaining that “I try to be positive, to see things positively for the future.” He continued by saying, “for nine years as a designer, I did darkness,” he explained. “I’ve just come out of that.” For this collection, the designer looked at American culture through the eyes of a child – with, as he said “serenity.”
With the autumn-winter 2017-18 menswear collection for Givenchy, Tisci managed once again to elevate streetwear to high-end fashion, which is what a runway show should be all about.
In the gallery below, discover our favorite looks from the collection and why we like them:
- Classic suit, out-of-this-world buttons
- Big buttons are the new buttons – we love the play with proportions.
- Shirt – tank top – sweatshirt – who knew this layered combination could look this good?
- He seems like he’s going to take off!
- A new way to wear a printed t-shirt.
- Basic colors + orange to spice it up!
- Fifty shades of red.
- The big print looks like the small one was blown up: love the contrast!
- Showing more tank top could be a new trend.
- Those stars have a life of their own! Well done!
- A shawl incorporated in the hoodie – now that’s new!
- Rocking the new school look after school.
- A sailor from the high seas.
- Again, tank tops over shirts are the new thing.
- A play with stripes done like no other.
