In February 2022, Kevin Rose, an early investor in Facebook and Twitter, and designer Justin Mezzell started the NFT-focused company. In the catalog, you can also find the Proof Collective and Oddities NFT collections.
Rose tweeted about the move on January 6, implying that the goal of the deal was to make the Moonbirds brand known in the “global” mainstream, not just as a major player in the Web3 arena.
“What does UTA bring to the table? They are 1,400 people strong, with divisions in film, television, music, video games, sports, books, branding and licensing, speaking, marketing, fine arts, broadcast, and more,” he said.
The company PROOF, which is behind the top-tier NFT project Moonbirds, has signed a deal with the well-known Hollywood talent agency United Talent Agency.
Rose went on to say that UTA will work for PROOF to “vet, broker, and execute partnerships and expansion opportunities across a variety of fields.”
Moonbirds is an Ethereum-based project that started in April 2022. It is made up of 10,000 avatar NFTs with an 8-bit owl theme. Data from CryptoSlam shows that it has brought in about $619.5 million in secondary sales so far.
Moonbirds is the eleventh most-sold collection on the NFT market. Its closest competitors are Doodles, which is in twelfth place with $553 million in sales, and CloneX, which is in tenth place with $794.9 million in sales.
Even though the UTA news seemed to be good, Moonbirds’ 24-hour sales volume has dropped by a huge 57.86%, with $442,747 worth of Moonbirds NFT changing hands in that time. But over seven days, the number of trades is still up by 63.74%.
Moonbirds’ strategy is similar to that of other big names in the NFT field who want to work with Hollywood.
The creators of CryptoPunks, Larva Labs, were the first to pave the way. In September 2021, they made a deal with UTA to represent the company’s intellectual property in TV, movies, video games, licensing, and publishing.
The next month, Yuga Labs, which now owns CryptoPunks, did the same thing by teaming up with UTA to bring the Bored Ape Yacht Club intellectual property to film, TV, music, and games. While the last deal made before PROOF was between WME, a competitor of UTA, and Boss Beauties, an NFT start-up.
