With the passing of George Martin – as with the passing of all the great musicians of the rock age – I go straight to the record collection. I'm sure we all do.
The great jukebox of the subconscious swings into action and throws forth the music unbidden.
So which George Martin classic did I absolutely have to hear this morning? Was it the wild tape loops of Being For The Benefit of Mr Kite? The vari-speed welding/collage job of Strawberry Fields? The beautiful harpsichord on In My Life?
None of the above.
It was Songs For Swingin' Sellers…
Before he produced The Beatles, the dapper Sir George was a producer of classic British comedy records and this Peter Sellers album from 1959 is my favorite. It's spinning scratchily on my beloved Dansette as I blog.
How's that for a life well lived? He made us dance and sing and when he wasn't doing that he made us laugh our heads off.
Thanks for the music Sir George. And thanks for the laughs, too.
