The National Museum of Gospel Music is prepping to open in Chicago!
The Gospel Museum will go on the site of the historic Pilgrim Baptist Church, which burned down in 2006.
Pilgrim Baptist Church has been credited as the birthplace of Gospel music. Thomas A. Dorsey, the “Father of Gospel Music”, was the music director at the church from 1932 until the late 1970s. His best-known composition, “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”, was performed by Mahalia Jackson and was a favorite of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Leading the project is Don Jackson, founder of the Stellar Gospel Music Awards.
The museum has already begun work on securing funding.
“The fundraising campaign will be going all the way to September 2020,” the target opening, Jackson told the Chicago Tribune. Of the $37.2 million in projected costs, $32 million is for the building and the remainder for an endowment. Operating costs are projected at about $4 million a year, to be raised from admission and other user fees.
