The Divine Comedy have shared new single ‘Norman and Norma’ ahead of the release of new album ‘Office Politics’ on 7 June.
Combining elements of ’80s legends ELO and the Human League with Belle and Sebastian’s twee quirks, the piano-led song finds Neil Hannon telling the story of a Norfolk couple named Norman and Norma (not from Bates Motel, sadly) who have to contend with all of life’s foibles as they raise a family. After getting married, they have the time of their lives on a honeymoon in Mallorca but then devastatingly Norma loses her job after maternity and they can never return on Norman’s salary alone.
As their children move out and their love begins to stagnate, the couple look for something to spice up their relationship – and they find it in the unlikely surroundings of a Norman battlefield re-enactment ‘fighting like its 1066’ – complete with chainmail and helmets…
