The whole digital world is dependent on electricity. Technology and the internet are progressing every passing day at a fast pace with hundreds of new devices coming into the marketplace. The computing power is growing, and so is the energy usage of these devices. It is magnifying up to two-fold from 2019 to 2020. Data centers are expanding much and more.
Nowadays, 5% of global energy consumption is dependent on supporting infrastructures and digital devices. Our laptops, mobiles, computers, and other devices rely on energy to function all the time. The necessity for more computing energy and power is growing at a massive rate. Innovative technologies like artificial intelligence and IT are demanding more energy. Users in the times of 5G have video streams in ever best quality.
There are more than 5000 physical servers in Data Centers
The division of energy consumption is between networks, devices, and data centers. The new category of massive data centers is known as hyper-scale. These data centers have up to 5000 physical servers with much high speed and high fiber count system.
Here are a few stats that you must know regarding energy consumption by Information Technology:
- The energy consumption of computers is more than data centers and networks.
- 30% of energy consumption is by data centers, 34% consumption by computers, and 36% consumption is by communication networks.
- The energy consumption by digital devices is much high, up to 7%, then the universal energy around the globe is just 3%.
- It expected that the operation and production of ICT would increase to nearly 21% in 2030
- It’s estimated that almost 70 billion kilowatts/hour are required every year to run the internet.
- According to an estimate, there are approximately 509,147 data centers. These centers spread on 26.6 million square meters having 430 hyper-scale data-centers.
- It recorded that up to one billion Pcs were in use in 2008; however, surprisingly, this number doubled (2 billion) in 2015.
- Their number of active mobile devices is 8,918,157,500. Furthermore, mobile phones are consuming energy approximately up to 2 kWh/year. Tablets are using 12kWh/year. And by 2020, the number of all IoT devices will consume according to an estimate of up to 20 billion.
- The energy consumption of Google is only about 0.013% of universal energy.
- When we talk about energy consumption in the IT sector, about 55% consumption is by users, and 45% of energy is by manufacturers
- The energy consumers are about 20% phone users, 19% data centers, moreover, 16% networks.
Energy consumption
- Consumption of energy in computer manufacturing is about 17% energy, TVs consume 11%, smartphones manufacturing about 11%, and other productions of other devices take 6% of energy.
- Energy consumption while charging mobiles is about 0.0003 kWh. However, it is equal to the charging of mobile by using USB for 7 minutes.
- Amazon visitors consume 0.0003 kWh of energy. Streaming songs of 5 MB MP3 consumes power 0.025 kWh.
- Furthermore, watching YouTube videos for five minutes consumes 0.065 kWh. Additionally, the consumption of energy in the streaming of 3 GB movie is 14.65 kWh. And online video games use about 78.13 kWh of electricity.
- The energy consumption of Bitcoin is about 20 TWh/year, with aluminum consuming the highest amount of energy when we compare it to other cryptocurrencies.
- In the training sessions of AI, the energy consumption is o.66 kWh/session.
- Online training and video streaming generate 60% of the world’s data flow.
- According to an estimation, the number of all IoT devices will increase by 200% in 2020. However, these IoT devices include wireless sensors, software, actuators, and computer devices.
The above-described facts are only a few facts that display the amount of energy consumption in the technological sector. With the expansion of new devices, energy consumption will increase quickly.
Video streaming consumes a lot of energy
This not done yet; even streaming a video consumes a lot of energy. Now you can imagine if you are working on a laptop/computer all day, how much the energy consumption/day.
A massive number of people related to the technological sector and the number of employees in the industry will rapidly increase shortly. With many people working in this sector, global energy consumption will increase side by side.
We have to find new and efficient sources of energy
Although now there are many practical ways to generate electricity today, however, these resources may not be sufficient to fulfill the future need for global energy consumption.
Therefore, the tech sector needs to work on devices that use less energy and does not load the world with their pressure. If enough energy resources will not be managed, then the world will suffer, which will not affect an acceptable situation.
