The difference between long- and short-stemmed roses

When shopping for flowers online or even when you pass by a flower shop, you are bound to notice just how many different types of roses they have in stock. Roses are undoubtedly one of the most popular of all fresh flowers. They can be sent for any occasion and to any recipient because each colour has its own special meaning. No matter the arrangement, roses always add that touch of elegance.

Apart from the various sizes and colours, it's also good to remember that the stems of these flowers can also vary in length. The length of the stem often determines how the flowers are used in different arrangements.

In nature, roses did not originally have such long stems. Through hybridization, the length of the stems was increased and today we have some amazing tall roses that can be used in various types of arrangements. Since the stems are so long, they can always be trimmed to the suitable length. While they are sometimes used as the focal flowers in an arrangement, they are more often used as mass flowers when larger blooms are included in the bouquet. For example, when lilies are used as the focal flowers, roses make excellent mass flowers.

While long-stemmed roses seem to be more desirable, short-stemmed varieties also serve many purposes. They are the most fragrant of all roses and they are often used in smaller and shorter arrangements ;like corsages, boutonnieres, and they can be added to your hair. Short-stemmed roses can also be used in small vases along with other small flowers and foliage. Think about creative vases like teacups or similar small holders that will support short stems. If need be, you can use floral foam, a frog, or something similar to hold the stems in place.

While long-stemmed roses are most commonly found at florists, the shorter varieties prove popular when the scent of the bouquet is important. Many people are happy to sacrifice the size of the bouquet for a stronger rose perfume. This is all about personal preference and how the bouquet is intended to be used.
