Jake Matheson's father has thrown down the gauntlet. Get married in a month or lose his position on the ranch. Jake lives and breathes the Double- Bar-K. He can't imagine leaving it. It just so happens he might have a chance at pulling off a marriage on short notice if the beautiful Hannah Ashton will give him a chance. Hannah has also been given an ultimatum by Holt Matheson. She needs a place for her Bison. If she agrees to spend two weeks with Jake - all night in the same bed, Holt will give her the land she needs. So, the race is on. Jake and Hannah go at it hot and heavy until it becomes a possibility that there may have been a condom malfunction and Hannah is nearly positive she is pregnant. The other issues at hand are that Hannah plans on pursuing her dream of becoming a Veterinarian no matter what. That means four years in Colorado attending school. Jake is not happy about those plans but then he gets some good advice and things look like they might work out after all. But, of course Jake's plans hit a snag and Hannah finds out Holt has practically forced Jake to marry. Will Jake be able to convince Hannah he really loves her and wants to marry her even if he has to give up the ranch?
While it might offend your sensibilities that a man would go around controlling the lives of his grown sons, Holt is the best there is at it. He may come off as sexist and harsh, but if you stick with the story you will understand more about him. These Chance Creek novels are always a treat. They are light hearted contemporary western romances that place a lot of emphasis on family. All families have their moments of selfishness and stubbornness. Some seem to pull more weight than others and some are more successful than others, there are arguments and hurt feelings, maybe a few tears, but when it comes to getting something done they all pull together to help one another. I think that's what makes these stories so appealing to me. I love the sexy hot cowboys and the steamy romance, but I also like the way everyone comes together through thick and thin, which is what family is all about.
Overall I give this one an A.
