By Rohit Dassani

The Coastal Crew is a one stop destination for all coastal dishes dedicated to Udupi and Mangalore area. The place comes from the same family as Fujian on 24th and the combined restaurants now serves Pan-Asian as well as Coastal dishes. Located just on the top floor of the same premises as Fujian on 24th, Bangalore; you don’t have to go any further to find your favorite dishes. The ambiance is of typical colonial café. The place is open from one side making it ideal for romantic dinners.

The Coastal Crew brings home some of the very best from the Mangalore region. Therefore, we tried the Masala Moru and the Soul Kadi. The Masala Moru is a Spiced Butter Milk with chilies and coriander leaves. The Soul Kadi can be tried both hot as well as cold but I choose the cold one. It was also spicy with kokum extract and then finished with garlic. Both the drinks were fantastic and set the right tone for the food that was about to be served.

First we had the Mushroom Ghee Roast. If you’re not familiar with the Ghee Roast family like me than this will be a perfect start. The Mushroom are Ghee Roasted with a mild spicy tomato gravy. The roast gave the mushroom a smoky flavor ideal to go with any sort of chilled drinks. I loved my Ghee Roasted Mushrooms. Next, we had the Hara Bhara Kebab. Spices and different veggies are mashed together to make this beautiful dish. The Paneer Skewers came next and as you can guess this was from the Fujian menu. The overall taste of the dish was good and what I really liked what that the sauce on top of the Paneer was adequate.

We were so full by then that we went straight to try their Veg Biryani. This Biryani is inspired from the coastal regions of Mangalore and is very different from a typical Hyderabadi Biryani. The biryani had a handful of veggies along with cashews and paneer. This is nothing less than fantastic. An all rounder dish served with Raita.

At The Coastal Crew you will find some really unique desserts. We tried the Fried Ice-cream and the Coconut Pudding. The Fried Ice-cream was literally fried, don’t believe me? Well a scoop of ice-cream is quoted in a coconut based batter and then deep-fried in hot oil. This was good in taste except that I didn’t like the cashews and raisins in this ice-cream. But you can go ahead and choose your ice-cream. The Coconut Pudding is a subtle coconutty dessert. No complains as I was totally satisfied with it.
