The Best Places to Go in Vietnam

Tourists who were once flocking to Thailand and Bali are now spreading out and heading to Vietnam, and for good reason. This is a big country, so it’s a good idea to do some research for great itineraries that combine different places together before you decide where you would like to go. Here are some of the best places to go in Vietnam:

Halong Bay

If you visit Vietnam, you simply must take the time to see Halong Bay, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world. The beauty here is breath-taking, so be sure to take a cruise through the bay.

There are plenty of tour operators to choose from, with different prices depending on the level of comfort you prefer.

Dalat

Dalat has been named the “Little Paris” of Asia, and this mountain town was incredibly popular with the colonial French, who left plenty of gorgeous architecture here. If you can’t stand the heat in Vietnam, Dalat is the perfect place to be, since it’s relatively cool year round.

Hoi An

Hoi An is a shopper’ paradise, and is full of boutique stores, and tailors ready to make you a new suit or dress. It’s also a pretty town, with a fun central marketplace, tons of restaurants and bars, and some of the best food you’ll find in Vietnam. Be sure to try the dumplings, and go for a wander though the historic old town.

Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a peaceful, laid-back little beach-side town, located close to Ho Chi Minh City. Many different types of travellers visit the town, since it’s only a few hours from the city, and has both flash resorts and hostels, along with both expensive and budget-friendly restaurants.

Nha Trang

This is the most popular seaside resort town in Vietnam, and if you’re looking to relax and party, this is the place to do it. The bars have daily drink specials, there are plenty of budget restaurants, and the white beach is perfect for sunbathing.

Hue

Hue was a former capital city, and home to the imperial Nguyen Dynasty, before falling on tough times during and after the Vietnam War.

History buffs will love Hue, as you can visit the complex which once housed the government, tombs of many former emperors, and the Perfume River. The weather is known to be terrible here, so be sure to bring an umbrella.

Hanoi

Hanoi is the former capital of Northern Vietnam, and today is the current capital of the country. Highlights of this city include the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, as well as Bia Hoi corner where you’ll find plenty of cheap bars.

Ho Chi Minh (Saigon)

Saigon many be smelly, noisy, and crowded, but it’s well worth a visit. Tourists are often put off by tales of crossing the road here, but consider it a story to tell and just be careful. The night market is excellent here, and you’ll be able to find some of the best food in Southeast Asia for just a few dollars.
