The Best Men’s Looks at the 2014 Tony Awards

By Attireclub @attireclub

The 68th edition of the Tony awards was held on June 8 and recognized achievements in Broadway shows for productions that were released in the 2013-2014 season. The ceremony, which was hosted for the fourth time by Hugh Jackman, took place in New York City at the Radio City Music Hall.

It was a star-studded event at which many celebrities participated, such as Zachary Quinto, Rosie O’Donnell, Tina Fey and Emmy Rossum.

The stars shined at the arrivals on the red carpet and displayed their extravagant theater fashion. We will take a look at some of the best men’s outfits from the gala and discuss them. We all know that generally at awards shows, men wear pretty much the same thing: a black tuxedo or a black suit. However, at this year’s Tonys, we could see a rather diverse palette of styles, colors and accessories.

Ben Vereen

The 67 year old actor opted for a very extraordinary red carpet outfit. Such an exotic piece is definitely not something we often see worn on the red carpet. We really liked his boldness and that he showed that men can look great in a variety of outfits, not only in conventional suits. The high contrast was very elegant and well complemented with subtle accessories.

Billy Porter

Billy Porter

The singer/actor/vocal coach, who is known for wearing colorful bow ties, took it up a notch at this ceremony by wearing a combination of two fantastic accessories that really broke up and redefined the classic suit.

The – what we assume was a shawl tied like a bow tie – and the pocked square made a great combination with a classic suit. Billy’s style is definitely a good lesson for all of us: he showed how you can develop your own style and be unique, while still wearing classic pieces and usual attire.

Matt Bomer

Matt Bomer

Bomer wore a very classic attire, there’s not much to say there, besides from the fact that he gave all of us a true lesson of how formal attire should look like. Gentlemen, take notes: all the pieces fit him well, the sleeves of the shirt pop out from the jacket just about an inch / 1,5 cm, and the bow tie is proportionate to the size of his body.

Zachary Levi

The 33 year old actor also wore a classic red carpet attire. He allowed his bow tie to be the center of attention by not putting any shirt buttons on display, creating an aired and elegant look. Take note that he respected the jacket button rule, by leaving the lower button unfastened. In the case of Mr. Bomer pictured above, it was OK for him to fasten his button, since he wore a single-button jacket.

RuPaul

American drag queen RuPaul wore a shiny pink jacket, matched with a white shirt, a black bow tie and black pants. What we can learn from Ru’s outfit is that if you want to wear a statement piece in a bold color or print, such as a very shiny pink jacket, you should keep your other pieces neutral and rather toned down, so that they don’t clash with each other. Also, you can see how shades such as pink, orange and other similar colors look great on men with dark skin.

Orlando Bloom

Orlando Bloom

Orlando chose an all-dark look, which in a way worked well for him. Everything came together well and composed a good red carpet outfit. The bow tie was in balance with the lapels and worked well due to Orlando’s haircut. Men with wavy hair can wear bigger lapels and accessories, but should always remember to keep them balanced with each other and with their overall body frame.

Rob Morrow

The 51 year old actor wore all black and white. However, he managed to be creative and wore a tie that featured a black and white floral print. What we liked about the tie was not only the pattern, but also the fact that Rob remembered to bring the shine. Special events such as galas are settings where you should never forget to display some shine! We really enjoyed the overall outfit, as it is a good style lesson on how you can use even a simple detail or a fine print to make your overall look better and to stand out. The simplicity of his outfit was complemented by his simple hairstyle which completed the look.

The clothes worn by men on red carpets definitely still have a long way until they match the sparkle brought by women and until they receive the same amount of attention and commentary. Whether men should stick to classic pieces or if they should bring the sparkle as well, that’s a debate we can have and we are sure that if we’ll have it, we will all have a lot to learn. Having different points of view is crucial in our culture, as only through debate, discussion and controversy we can grow and develop new things by learning a lot about other people, the world and us.

Now it’s up to you! Which man did it best? Did you prefer Orlando’s dark knight outfit, RuPaul’s fancy jacket, Ben’s unusual pick or Matt and Zachary’s classic choices? Cast your vote in our poll below!
