The second installment of New York Fashion Week: Men since its launch in July last year, has brought together a large number of American and international designers that showcased their vision for the fall-winter 2016-17 season.
If we were to make a generalization, we could say that the theme of the season was casual elegance: many looks and pieces presented during the shows were both very casual and very dressy at the same time, which is a balance that is quite hard to obtain. One needs a very good sense of proportion, color and shape to obtain that and the designers who showcased this season during NYFWM definitely deserve kudos for that.
Let's take a look at the best looks from the fall-winter 2016-17 collections presented this February during New York Fashion Week: Men.
What we really enjoy about this Ovadia & Sons outfit is exactly its casual elegance. The ensemble is both relaxed and dressy: it can work in a multitude of settings and the pieces can be mixed in a large variety of ways.
The Tommy Hilfiger fall-winter 2016-17 collection was preppy as always, but this year, the All-American designer put a new spin on the word "preppy". Casual, but impeccably stylish and very sophisticated, the collection was one of the most versatile, colorful and ready-to-wear collections of the season.
Jeffrey Rüdes delivered a stylish, elegant and fitted collection for the fall-winter 2016-17 season. Wearing burgundy in the fall is a must, and this coat could be the ultimate burgundy winter overcoat. With a good eye for proportion, the looks from the Jeffrey Rüdes collection made an important mark at this season's New York Fashion Week: Men.
With a good eye for color, the Opening Ceremony collection, and especially this look, were a great highlight of the event. Wearing colors that lie extremely close to each other on the color wheel or the same color in different shades is a subtle elegance that is not easy to pull off. Well done!
A well-made cape is always going to be on our "Best of" list. The cape was one of the inspiration points of the Greg Lauren FW 2016-17 collection. The first cape of the collection, which you can see in the picture, was a cool, edgy and fashionable interpretation of the classic cape. The other looks were more sporty and more wearable, but the statement cape is definitely one of our favorite items from the collection!
Being sexy as a man without being ostentatious is something that's not very common these days. This is why we need to give credit to Orley for their young, hip and cool collection. Such a collection was long overdue, so kudos to Orley for doing it and doing it so well.
Mature, masculine and modern were three words that describe the Michael Bastian looks best. It's really great when you see clothes and outfits that are strong and manly, but that still maintain a playfulness that is very necessary in today's world.
Very sporty, but still sophisticated and polished, John Elliot showed us how you can do sportswear runway-ready. With so many attempts to create elegant sportswear these days, John Elliot truly stood out and gave a true lesson of what comfort, style and casualness are really all about.
Going for an all-gray palette and mixing high and low, the Todd Snyder collection was true to the season's trend by mixing pieces from different worlds to create a cohesive look. This outfit in particular shows, once again, how you can look stylish, comfortable and sophisticated even when you are wearing all-neutral clothes.
The Theory collection was smooth and well-cut, which is always a great way to go. What we can take from this look in particular is that you can wear neutrals such as beige, dark blue, gray, etc., and still look polished, under the condition that your clothes are polished, fitted and well-proportioned.
The expectations for this edition of New York Fashion Week: Men were quite high and they were, to a rather good extent, met. The fact that the main trend was mixing very different pieces and the variety of color palettes, styles and cuts shows that it is relevant to have a whole new men's fashion event, as, before the launch of the first New York Fashion Week: Men, there was a lot of talk of whether such an even is necessary and relevant.
The men's fashion world is going strong and steady and is continuously growing, so the more fashion events dedicated to menswear there are out there, the better it is, as the modern man is more refined and layered than ever, and the fashion world needs to meet these needs.
