Masks will still be in the game.

I tested each of the masks by wearing them on 2 mile runs. I've done 24 miles so far. Who says writing is a sedentary job?

The 5 best face masks for running

During my tests, I noticed the following five masks for a variety of reasons, but they all had one thing in common: They didn't suck my barrel exponentially more than usual.

Editor's note, December 18, 2020: Athleta has discontinued this mask for women (you can still buy it for kids) and replaced it with the Activate face mask. Like the Made to Move mask, the Activate mask is made of breathable fabric and has wires that fit your face perfectly. However, it does not come with a bag for a filter. We will update this list when we have the opportunity to test the activation mask.

Below is our original review of the Made to Move mask.

I am in love. These. Mask. I had to put extra emphasis there so that you would know exactly how much I love this mask. I want to scream how much I love that mask from the rooftops. OK, bubbles over. Here are the technical details: The Athleta Made to Move mask is a soft, non-medical mask made from polyester, elastane, and mesh. That alone should tell you how light and breathable this mask is.

The Made to Move mask consists of two layers of fabric and extremely soft, adjustable ear straps for a comfortable fit. The breathable mask also has a semi-rigid but flexible noseband to keep everything in place. You can also clip the optional head strap in place of the ear straps to prevent your ears from getting sore.

While running, this mask stayed the whole time and at no point did I feel like I was having trouble breathing (apart from the usual heavy breathing that occurs during a run).

Lightweight, breathable, moisture wicking and adjustable: this product is everything you need for a running mask for running. The Buff USA filter mask is made of a performance material made of 95% polyester and 5% elastane (elastane), which gives it the perfect stretch.

It also features wide elastic head straps that are easy to adjust - it uses the same mechanism that is used to adjust a bra strap. I found the wide straps to stay in place better than the thinner straps of other masks.

This mask technically requires the use of a filter that I'm not a huge fan of, but you can always leave it out. Without a filter, it may not be as effective at reducing the spread of germ particles.

Mission Max

If you're more of a neck cuff person, use the Mission Cooling Gaiter / Face Cover for running. I'm not sure how this thing works exactly, but it's like it takes your sweat away and turns it into cold steam. I had fully expected not to like this neck seal, but it quickly became one of my favorite face masks to run on when I realized I wasn't turning into a sweaty mess.

The product description states that it "is activated with water to cool to 30 ° F below average body temperature," and I suspect that sweat can act as water. I had some problems with this neck seal that easily slipped off, but I think I may only have a small head because I let a friend try this face cover and she had no problems.

Beyond yoga

For me, the Beyond Yoga face mask was barely a second behind the Athleta mask. The only factor that kept this mask from hanging in the first place? The head straps. Everything about the Beyond Yoga mask is perfect for walking, but I had problems with the wearer.

This mask has two ties that you need to tie at the back of your head. I kept tangling my hair in the ties and it took several tries to secure it so that the mask stayed in place.

The mask is perfectly stretchy and can wick away sweat incredibly well, which made up for the complicated wearer. Now that I can actually edit it, I want another set to get me through more workouts with fewer washes. Once you've secured the straps you can keep them tied until you wash the mask.

Zensah makes all kinds of performance clothing and accessories, so an athletic face mask was a natural addition to the brand's offering. I loved this mask mostly for the fit: it felt nice but wasn't restrictive. The seams of the mask stuck to my face, but there was space between the nose and lips and the inner fabric.

There is silver embedded in the fabric of the Zensah mask (the fabric is 2% silver), and it appears that silver has some antimicrobial properties. However, you should still wash this face mask after use to ensure that it is disinfected.

The Zensah mask wasn't the best for wicking away sweat. At the end of my two mile run, it definitely felt wetter than my other top 4 face masks for running, but it still did a pretty good job. I think this mask could use some sort of adjustment mechanism because while it fits me well I could see the non-adjustable head straps pose a problem for others.

Also tested

While the following masks are good for too To runThey weren't my favorites. For each, I explain why and what they might be good for instead.
