The Benefits of Rose Hip Oil

I’m really excited to tell you about Sukin certified organic rose hip oil.  If you’ve followed the blog, you know that I have complained about my skin many, many, many times…that’s cause I’m either horrible at taking care of my skin or my skin is just impossible.  Since moving to London, the hard water and added stresses have made my skin even MORE impossible.  It got to such a point that even my cousin (who makes homemade and all natural perfumes, soaps,  hair products, skin products and other toiletries) has been trying to help me out – by trying to find a good blend of essential oils to use on my skin.  One of the things she taught me is that when using essential oils on your skin, you cannot just choose any old essential oil and slather it on – no….you have to dilute many of these oils in a carrier oil – and the best carrier oils are ones that react similarly to the natural oils in your skin.  There are quite a few, but I like choosing carrier oils that have added benefits – so one oil is quickly becoming my favorite – there are so many benefits of rose hip oil!

I always heard about rose hips but it never clicked to me exactly what it was….until I was walking with  my Mom last year and she commented on the rose hips.  Confused, I had no clue what she was talking about until she pointed out that rose hips are the little buds left after the roses withered.  I guess, then, that it’s sort of the “fruit” of the rose bush.  The natural oils of the rose hips are extracted through either a hot or cold press process, similarly to other oils – of course, cold pressed is preferable.  Anyway, Sukin approached me and asked me to try their rose hip oil, so I decided to do a little research….and you know my research means Google….so no…I’m not an expert nor a medical practitioner, so this is just random facts I’ve found all over the web on rose hip oil.

Rose hip oil has great benefits for your skin because:

  • it is a chockful of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins A and C, Lycopene and Omegas 3 and 6.  These vitamins and Omegas make it an excellent addition to your skincare routine.  The high vitamin C levels stimulate collagen production helping to fill in the existing fine lines to help eliminate wrinkles as well, thus rejuvenating your appearance.  It also assists in reducing the appearance of dark spots, aging spots and any hyper-pigmentation that you may have due to UV exposure, age, acne or any other skin problems.
  • it has very similar properties to the natural oils in your skin and therefore penetrates easily into deeper layers of the skin, improving the moisture levels of the skin from the inside out and holding the moisture in so that your skin remains soft, plump and moist.  This reduces the amount of wrinkles and fine lines that form under the top layer of the skin making your skin appear smoother and silkier, and definitely helps improve the dryness that tends to appear due to hard water, aging or anything else, really.

Now my personal main concerns are allergens, acne and hyper-pigmentation.  The first concern is always a concern with allergy queens like me, so I’m testing the Sukin rose hip oil to make sure I’m okay with it before slathering it all over my face…I think that’s the wise thing to do anyway!  IF I’m not allergic to it (which I don’t think I will be because I’ve used many rose products before), then I will be trying it mainly to reduce the dark marks that are sprinkled all over my face at the moment.  It would be great if I could not use as much foundation/cover up/powder on a daily basis.

The Sukin certified organic rose hip oil is marketed in such a way that it stresses the oil’s soothing, renewing and hydrating purposes, but I’ve found that if you can imbibe your skin with moisture and stay hydrated, then most of your skin problems actually disappear (unless there’s something that is medically wrong – in that case, please go see a dermatologist).  The Sukin brand of rose hip oil contains no less than 90% essential fatty acids and vitamins and costs £13.99 per 25ml bottle or £22.99 per 50ml bottle on the retail market.

So, I haven’t had a chance to actually try the oil yet, but from using rose hip oil in some of my cousin’s concoctions, I’m a big fan and am quite excited.  I think it’s one of the “miracle” oils for my skin – and will definitely be updating you on twitter and instagram about my progress with it!  Do you use essential oils?  Which ones do you love the most?
