Garry Rogers:Halsey correctly points out that invasive weeds are increasing fire frequency beyond chaparral’s tolerance. Grazing livestock, roads, trails, firebreaks, and other developments give the weeds access. Removing chaparral will reduce fire intensity, but it will result in more frequent grass/forb fires and far fewer wildlife species. Controlling the developers is the solution. We need much stricter land-use and building codes for people and chaparral to coexist.
