The Art of the Simple Summer Picnic

One of my favorite things to do on a sunny summer day is to pack a bag and head out for a picnic with Ken. An impromptu–it’s beautiful out, so let’s go!–sort of picnic. Here are a few ways to keep things light, simple and stress free so you can dash out the door and relish these fleeting days of summer.

  • Don’t over think it or fuss over it too much! It’s supposed to be a laid back lounge and snack session in the park.
  • Rather than packing an entire lunch which usually requires a cooler and an extra arm to carry it all, focus on an afternoon snack. Cheese, homemade crackers, olives, veggies, fruit, and cookies. And if you plan to bike to the park, packing light makes that journey oh-so-much more enjoyable.
  • Try packing what you’ve already got in your kitchen. If you cook somewhat often you’ll be surprised at what you’ll be able to pull together, plus you’ll avoid that extra store run allowing yourself more time relaxing in the park. We had zucchini, snap peas and red grapes in our fridge, which aren’t obvious picnic choices, but the zucchini paired well with the Boursin Cheese and the grapes and snap peas were great finger foods. Using what we already had made things quick and easy, and pulling together ‘something from nothing’ was a good feeling.
  • Consider using reusable items for food storage to reduce waste and your need to dispose of it. I like glass containers over plastic ones (because they don’t emit toxins when hot). Or try wrapping cookies in a lightweight cotton tea towel and tying the ends together for safe travel.
  • If you don’t have a picnic blanket, a simple flat cotton sheet will do. It’s lightweight and if need be, you can easily throw it in the washer when you get home.
  • Don’t forget a book or journal. After a little snackin’ and talkin,’ lay back and take some time to yourself whether it’s with a good book, or just closing your eyes for a few. You’re sure to feel refreshed afterwards!
