Adaline has been the same age for almost eight decades she has gotten into a routine of every 10 years leaving her current place and going somewhere new so people don’t get suspicious of her never aging appearance.
This film came out at a very good time after my obsession with Gossip Girl, hello Serena in a lead role in a film aka Blake Lively incase anyone doesn’t know what I am going on about. So as soon as I even saw the poster for the film I thought I need to see that. The story is pretty interesting too, although maybe the way she gets this possible curse of never aging is a little bit expected, a bolt of lightning hasn’t that been used for many things before?
I was very intrigued about what was going to happen with her never aging especially as she kept coming back to San Francisco where she was born and grew up. To make things even more interesting she had a daughter Fleming who eventually over took her in the aging process which actually makes for some rather amusing scenes.
Adaline constantly changes her name and her process of living an eternal life seems to be running along nicely as she is used to just leaving the people who end up caring about her. This all changes when she meets Ellis but not so much just how persistent he is with her but when she goes to meet his parents. It turns out she has actually met William before . . . They were lovers many years before and he recognises her. She does attempt to hide the truth but sometimes these things are not possible.
The only problem with the film is that it doesn’t move at a very fast pace, it seems to take a while to get going as it slowly goes through the backstory and tries to tease the audience as they wait to see what is going to happen next. I felt a little bit bored at times in all honesty which disappointed me as I had been looking forward to this film. Not taking away that it does have an interesting idea behind it and a heart.
Blake Lively carries the film well and I had no idea Harrison Ford was even in the film until he appeared so that was a nice surprise. He still has such fantastic on-screen presence, and I thought his role in the story was heartbreaking at the same time, you could not help but feel sorry for him being reminded of a lost love and having his heart-broken. But I guess you must have your heart-broken at some point to be able to love again?
It does keep you guessing and wondering if anything is going to break her constant age and that she will resume the aging process. I obviously won’t spoil if this happens or not, but it certainly will make you think about it. What would you do if you had unlimited time. It turned out Adaline took the time to learn many languages as one of her time killing things.
It does have a little charm and was a good idea, but be warned it does feel slow at times too. But if you can deal with that I am sure you will enjoy this one.
