The 6 Best Mattresses Under $1000

Note: Our reviews are based upon a survey of information available from supplier websites, personal experience, online user comments, forum posts and other online information.

1. Sweetnight 10 Inch Cool Gel Memory Foam Mattress

The Sweetnight 10-inch cool gel memory foam mattress provides 3 layers for maximum comfort:

  • 2" gel-infused memory foam on top.
  • 5" Comfort foam beneath that: it consists of two soft parts with a harder middle part that supports your body and eases pressure on your pressure points.
  • 3" of high density support foam for deep-down body support.

This structure provides a solid support base with a central comfort and support area, topped by a memory foam layer infused with gel to keep you cool when sleeping.

It is the perfect mattress for any sleeping position. It can separate you from your partner's movement during the night while still allowing some 'bounce'. This 10-inch thick mattress provides an ideal combination of comfort and support.

Editor's Notes: Whether you are a side-sleeper, back-sleeper, stomach-sleeper or you sleep with a partner, the Sweetnight 10-inch gel memory foam mattress provides you with an excellent sleeping surface. Irrespective of your weight, you will get adequate support from the 10 inches of thick mattress foam which helps you avoid tossing and turning at night. The gel infused in the foam absorbs heat and then dissipates it over time while you sleep.

2. Layla Sleep Memory Foam Mattress

The Layla Sleep memory foam mattress is made using memory foam that has been infused with copper. This offers a comfortable sleep with good support for all types of sleeper. It also provides a cooler sleep promoted by the conductive copper. The Layla mattress also has two firmness levels in the same mattress: medium soft one side and firm on the other, so you can flip it for the comfort level you like best.

The cover is manufactured using Thermogel: a food grade cooling additive that activates when your body temperature rises above a certain level. It then cools you down to prevent you overheating in bed. This can be an issue with some memory foams, but not with this one. The copper also helps keep you cool, and assists in reducing joint pain and improving blood circulation.

The soft side comprises 3-inches of 3.5 lb copper-infused memory foam with a 2-inch comfort layer of 1.8 lb density convoluted foam. The firmer side is 1-inch of 1″ of 3.5 lb copper infused memory foam with no comfort layer for a firmer feel. Each of these sides sandwiches a 4.5-inch base layer of 2.0 density foam with an ILF of 36 for good overall support for both sides.

Editor's Notes: This mattress appears to have everything going for it. Its cooling properties are based on science, as are its benefits to those with joint pain. Copper is a well-known metal used by those suffering arthritis, and it is also conductive - helping you stay cool by conducting away the heat. The Thermogel mattress cover also helps to keep you cool. Another good feature of the Layla Sleep memory foam mattress is that it can be flipped over to change the hardness level of the sleeping surface: one side medium soft and the other harder.

3. Signature Sleep Signature 13 Inch Independently Encased Coil Mattress

The Signature Sleep Signature 13-inch independently encased coil mattress is constructed using a support layer of individually pocketed springs. The springs are steel coils, each in its own pocket and unattached to its neighbors. This innerspring core is covered by a soft foam top covered by a bamboo rayon material.

The top layer is a soft pillow layer for comfort, lying over a layer of high density support foam. The pocketed springs help to distribute your weight evenly across the mattress. They also promoted a good level of partner separation: you will be less likely to be affected by your partner's tossing and turning when sleeping.

This Signature Sleep mattress meets the Federal Flammability Standard 16 CFR 1622 regulations and is CertiPUR-US certified for its lack of VOCs, heavy metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons and residual odor. Its springs are 9.8" high, with 15-gauge steel coil springs around the perimeter for strength and durability, and 13.5-gauge in the center for comfort.

Editor's Notes: This is an excellent example of a pocketed coil mattress priced under $1,000. If you prefer not to use memory foam for personal reasons, then this is the better of the two options we provide that are not memory foam. It is a very comfortable mattress to lie and sleep on, and it offers the type of support expected from an innersprings mattress. It is also the best of the mattresses reviewed for bounce - you know what we mean!

4. Tuft & Needle Mattress

The Tuft & Needle mattress is manufactured using 'Adaptive Foam' which offers cool pressure relief and localizes your movement from your partner. It claims to be an advance on standard 'memory foam' - but this remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it seems to be an excellent mattress that is suitable for all sleeping positions.

While claiming to be a step forward from memory foam, the Tuft & Needle T&N Adaptive Foam mattress offers few technical reasons why it should be. However, it gets some good reviews, so it must be providing some properties of memory foam that satisfies its users.

Editor's Notes: This mattress seems to claim to be an advance on memory foam mattresses. It includes a TB-117 compliant fire barrier, but does not explain how this was achieved. The company states that it is chemical-free. Otherwise, the mattress appears to be a good alternative to an expensive memory foam mattress.

5. Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch Memory Foam Mattress

The Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch memory foam mattress is available with a quilted or plain cover. We are using the quilted cover mattress for our review. This 12-inch thick mattress is a wonder to sleep upon, with a memory foam top layer offer superb comfort and support. The support is enhanced by the base Support-Plus foam layer.

Made in the USA, this mattress is amazing value at well below $1,000. The 20-year limited warranty is more than you would normally get. The fact that it is made in the USA will make the warranty easier to invoke in the event of there being any issue with it. Its soft poly-cotton blend cover helps to keep the mattress clean.

Editor's Notes: There appears to be a few people who found this mattress too hard for them. However, the vast majority loved it. Most people who purchased this mattress appeared to find it beneficial and helped them sleep.

Memory foam is a funny thing - many people love it and many hate it. Some find it very supportive and others find it too hot. If you are considering purchasing a mattress under $1000, then it might pay you to find one in a store and check it out. Lie on it if you can, and then purchase online at a lower price. The Sleep Innovations Shiloh 12-inch memory foam mattress is an excellent example of its kind. If you like memory foam mattresses, then this would be a great choice.

6. Bear Mattress

Bear Mattress offers a good blend of cooling foam, pressure relief for those painful pressure points and core support for any type of sleeper: front, side or back. The Bear mattress is manufactured with four distinct layers designed to offer support and comfort for all body shapes and weights. The four layers, from bottom to top, are:

  • At the bottom is a high density support foam. This provides excellent support for people of all weights.
  • Then on top of that, there is a foam known as 'Quick response Foam' that increases the support for pressure points and also enhances spinal alignment - great for those with bad backs!
  • Then there is a layer of graphite-gel impregnated memory foam. This is very cooling, the carbon absorbing most of the heat you generate during the night. It claims to possess seven times the cooling power of regular memory foam.
  • The top layer is a Celliant* cover: we do not include this as a 'layer' in our table above. This is a specialist cover that helps to increase the flow of blood and oxygen in the body. Both are essential for recovery from extreme physical activity. Check out Celiant Here.

Editor's Notes: We like the presence of Celiant in this Bear mattress. Celiant has been proved to help people make the best use of oxygen in their metabolism. Apart from this, the Bear mattress is well constructed with four well-defined layers, each of which has a specific part to play in providing you with high quality, restful sleep. Bear uses science well, exemplified by its use of Celiant.

Buyer's Guide to Best Mattresses Under $1,000

Our selection of the best six mattresses under $1,000 is intended to help you make the right choice from mattresses within your budget. Some people may prefer soft mattresses and others harder, so we have provided a choice that should suit almost everybody. What should you be looking for in a mattress, particularly in one costing less than $1,000?

First, do not look for a cheap version of a more expensive mattress. This often leads to compromise in quality. The same applies if you purchase the lowest priced mattress available in an expensive brand. You are better looking for a top of the range product from a respectable brand.

A lot depends if you have a preference. We have selected the best mattress we could find below the maximum $1,000 price range. It is no coincidence that four of our six choices include memory foam. One other consists of what is referred to as an 'adaptive' polyurethane foam and another is a good innerspring mattress. We have been seeking 'the best' and not a representative of each mattress type: latex, innerspring, etc.

When looking for mattresses below $1,000 you can still find very high quality products with a good range of harness/softness ratings. Our choice includes hard and soft mattresses and one that is both (the Layla Sleep memory foam mattress.)

What to Look For Under $1,000

When looking for a mattress under $1,000 don't think you are buying cheap, because you are not. Sure, many mattress brands sell for a lot more than that, but don't sell yourself short by thinking that a) you are buying cheap and that b) you must, therefore, make some concessions. That is because:

A. You aren't, and
B. You do not have to make any concessions.

You can get an excellent mattress of any type for under $1,000. Although the best we have found are largely memory foams, there are reasons for that. We also list an innerspring and an 'adaptive' foam mattress. So let's get going by discussing memory foam and some of its pros and cons.

What is Memory Foam

Memory form is a type of polyurethane foam that responds to pressure and your body heat. It tends to soften and 'give' where it is in contact with your body. The result is that it supports you when sleeping without putting extra pressure on your so-called 'pressure points'. These are your hips, shoulders, knees and even your elbows if you sleep on your side.

Unlike a standard latex foam or an innerspring mattress, a memory foam mattress conforms to the shape of your body. It is an excellent choice for anybody suffering hip problems and most types of sleeper: side sleepers and back sleepers. Because the memory foam mattress tends to sink with those parts of your body that contact it, it supports your entire body evenly. It may also be good for some stomach sleepers, who might also appreciate a memory foam pillow that gives their head good support.

Who Benefits From a Memory Foam Mattress?

Memory foam mattresses not only provide a more comfortable sleeping base, but also improve the quality of sleep. They help prevent the irritability and lack of concentration associated with sleep deprivation. Most people notice the difference from the first day they use a memory foam mattress.

Although the top-end of memory foam mattresses, such as Tempur-Pedic mattresses, start at over $1,000, you can find many excellent memory foam mattresses at way below that price. Four of the mattresses we have reviewed here are prime examples of these. They provide all the benefits that this type of responsive foam offers.

Memory Foam Not Good for Babies: There is a major negative aspect of these mattresses, however. They should not be used for babies or very young children who can sink their faces into it. Adults and toddlers can move about more in bed, but babies cannot and can be caught in a depression in a memory foam mattress and smothered.

How Do Memory Foam Mattresses Work?

Memory foam mattresses possess a property known as viscoelasticity - we touched briefly on that earlier. This means that it contains substances that enable the foam to deform under conditions of heat and pressure. As it absorbs body heat, that heat and the pressure of your body enable the foam to conform to the shape of your body, particularly to the shape of your bone structure and pressure points.

Your body is therefore properly supported without your spine sagging into the mattress as it can with innerspring and latex foam mattresses. When you move in bed, the foam reforms to its original shape, and provides support for your new sleeping position. A memory foam mattress is great for those suffering from arthritis and back pain. The pocketed innerspring mattress included in our review also helps prevent sagging since only those individual springs you are lying on actually compress.

Most of the less expensive memory foam mattresses are not 100% memory foam. In fact, many over $1,000 are also part memory foam and part latex. A bottom high-density latex layer can provide a good support base. The memory foam mattresses we have included in this review consist of from 2 - 4 different layers. Our top choice consists of a layer of memory foam, comfort foam then a harder support foam base.
