Spring is already here and summer is fast approaching, which means it's time to watch this year's strawberry full moon.
The strawberry moon, also known as the full moon of June, is generally celebrated as the last full moon of spring or the first full moon of summer. Although it was named by Native Americans after the succulent red berries that are currently in season, don't expect it to be berry in color. Friday evening, when the strawberry moon rises on the eastern horizon, it will emit a beautiful golden glow. And, as the last full moon and one of the biggest moons of 2020, it will appear larger than life!
The Strawberry Moon will also exhibit a penumbral lunar eclipse, which occurs when the moon passes through the twilight of the Earth, or a partial shadow, which makes part of the moon darker. Unfortunately, this phenomenon will not be visible anywhere in North America, but the Virtual Telescope Project will broadcast it live from Italy on Friday, over a magnificent view over the rooftops of Rome.
