The 2018 Oscars in Menswear

By Attireclub @attireclub

The Oscars, officially called Academy Awards usually take place in late February and are the last of the major awards shows that celebrate the American film industry. This year, the ceremony was moved a little and was held at the beginning of March, not to interfere with the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

2018 marked the 90 th edition of the Oscars. This year, most awards went to "The Shape of Water", which also had the most nominations. Out of its 13 nominations, the movie won 4, including the one for best picture.

It was a night filled with celebrity and the classic Hollywood glitz and glam. However, as a surprise came many of the outfits worn by the men. Generally, when it comes to dressing up for awards shows, most male celebs wear the same old suits or evening jackets. Once in a while someone will make a bold move or wear something out of the ordinary, but that's about it.

This time around, we can even talk about a trend in menswear, and we don't mean just the classic suit or tuxedo jacket trend. The biggest trend these at the red carpet of the Dolby Theater where the ceremony was held was velvet. Velvet came in many colors and styles and we really enjoyed seeing a change on a major red carpet. Generally, it can be said that among the male movie stars of today there is an ongoing trend of softness and chill. Darren Criss, Ansel Elgort, Armie Hammer, Matthew McConaughey and others all wore colorful velvet evening jackets. Speaking of velvet, it needs to be said that velvet is a tricky fabric in that it can look cheap, even if it is of high quality, especially when photographed. This is why; if you plan to invest in quality velvet suit, brace yourself for a lot of leg work. And bring a good camera along.

Besides velvet, we also saw some nice things we liked, such as double-breasted jackets, such as the one by Hermes worn by Tom Holland.

Moreover, some guys went for pear, white or even soft pink suits. Jordan Peele or Timothée Chalamet fall in this category.

As we always say, some things, such as a classic suit, are timeless. Thus, we have to also say that we appreciated the classic looks of the stars as well. It's hard to go wrong with a suit. While charcoal or black are the most used version, sometimes a navy suit may be a better option, as it makes you look more youthful and dynamic. Of course, a navy evening suit is even better. Lakeith Stanfield's Ermenegildo Zegna Couture for the Green Dress initiative is the best example for that. His suit, made from sustainable silk looked dressy, elegant and polished.

In conclusion, it can be said that we're glad to see more color and diversity in style brought to the red carpet and hope to see more in the coming months and years.

Celebrity is still one of the strongest avenues through which sartorial trends trickle down in society, so it will definitely be interesting to see whether velvet suits will actually catch on with the public in the summer season to come or whether it was just the nice spring air that made these guys put on some glam.
