The question of whether or not the 2012 United States men’s Olympic basketball team could defeat, or even compare, to the almighty 1992 Dream Team has been the talk of the sport’s nation for weeks now. At first, the fact that this question was even being asked seemed completely absurd, to most sports fans. I mean no one could compare to THE Dream Team could they? However, once you really think about what each team has, or had, to offer, it really makes you start to wonder.

The 1992 Dream Team was made up of some of the world’s all time greatest athletes. In fact, 11 players on the Dream Team’s roster were named NBA Hall of Famers. Moreover, the Dream Team dominated every team they faced, winning by at least 20 points every game, and therefore winning a gold medal with an undefeated record.

On the other hand, the 2012 Olympic team isn’t lacking in skill either. With players like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Kevin Durant, this team is also stacked with “the best of the best.” Additionally, this team has the privilege of being coached by Mike Krzyzewski, who has the most wins for any college basketball coach, period.

Also, just like the Dream Team, the 2012 team is expected to bring home a gold medal for the United States. While the 2012 team may not beat every team by 20 points or more, they are still expected to win. And, so far, the stats of the 2012 team are comparable to the stats of the 1992 team.

Therefore, I think it is safe to say that the 2012 Men’s team would definitely compare to the 1992 Dream team. I am not convinced the 2012 team could defeat the Dream Team, but they would definitely give them a run for their money.
